The Importance of Mentors

Having mentors and coaches has changed my life. I can’t stress the importance of having someone to be inspired by, to learn from and to model when you’re starting out on a new journey.

Whether it’s health and fitness related, a new business, or even a new skill or hobby you’re looking to learn about, seeking help from people who’ve already been there is a great kicking off point. 

Mentors push you out of your comfort zone. They challenge you. They make you think outside the box. They show you shortcuts on the path to success. They inspire you to dig deeper and strive for more. 

Whilst I do think investing in 1-on-1 coaching and mentoring is amazing if you have the funds - I know that I wouldn’t be where I am now if it wasn’t for Jen - you don’t have to have tons of money to get the benefits of a mentor. 

Some other, smaller ways you can be mentored and coached by someone…

Books

If they’ve written a book about their field, grab it. When you think about it, a book is someone pouring years of knowledge onto paper; mistakes and lessons, stories, advice and anecdotes. Imagine all the mistakes you could avoid by learning from theirs. How much more confident you’ll feel knowing they were once where you are. Reading books written by these people on topics I want to learn is a vital part of my daily schedule. 

Social Media

Many people I’d consider mentors are huge figures I admire and follow online. If you connect with someone’s message, follow them everywhere; their podcast, Youtube videos, Twitter. Get them in your feed every day, and you’ll constantly be learning from them as they update. 

Also, don’t be afraid to get their attention by tweeting them, commenting on posts and generally supporting their work. Never underestimate how much people appreciate that. You showing them how much value they give you, not only encourages them to give more, but also gets you on their radar. You never know what could happen if you get the chance to connect further down the line! 

Studying Them

Soak up everything they’ve ever said/done publicly like a sponge. Google is your friend, and if you don’t have the money, you can use your spare time to access free resources they’ve provided all over the internet. 

Read every interview they’ve ever done, guest posts, collaborations with other influencers, and anything else you can find. 

TED Talks

I love Ted Talks! They’re a great way to get inspired on a certain topic and really make you think. They cover so many topics so you’re bound to find something that interests you, and I’ve discovered many inspiring people to follow from watching their Ted Talk. A fantastic way to spend your lunch break! 


I know I’ve discussed mentoring in a broader sense today, as I wanted this advice to be accessible to anyone, whatever your budget.
