Autumn/Winter Lipstick Picks

There is something so special and transformational about lipstick. It's the boldest makeup item you can wear. As Sali Hughes said in her recent discussion on Women's Hour (which I highly recommend you go listen to) - lipstick is one of the only everyday makeup products that isn't supposed to look natural. Our lips are not naturally as bright as a rose, or a raspberry, or a Snow White red apple. Lipstick is a statement, and it's there to be seen.

I think that's what makes it such a mood booster. Particularly during the colder months I reach for bold lips way more. My style gets quite a bit darker in Autumn/Winter - more black comes out of my wardrobe, more eyeliner, more leather boots. And so lipstick is an essential accessory to finish it all off.

Today I want to share some current favourites with you that I've been loving recently.

Rimmel the only 1 matte lipstick

First up, are these gorgeous two from Rimmel's brand new The Only 1 Matte Lipstick range* - I was lucky enough to receive these as a press sample, and there are some real gems in the range, but these two have stood out to me.

'Trendsetter' is a muted, rosy-beige nude that is a great everyday colour for me. I just can't stand to wear paler nudes anymore - I need something that warms up my complexion rather than takes away from it - and this ticks all the boxes.

'Take The Stage' is a true Hollywood red, always a favourite for me in any collection. I grabbed for this one first and I was not disappointed. It's a classic colour, and Rimmel have seriously upped their game with the formula.

This range is very, very matte. Make sure you wear lip balm in between uses, as if you don't look after your lips these could cling to dry patches. Luckily, I haven't had that problem at all and find they apply feeling really smooth and creamy, yet dry down to that matte feel that lasts for hours and never slides around. I've found you can even use them without lip liner, as they don't bleed.

Autumn Winter Lipsticks

Next up, is the Ciaté X Olivia Palermo lipstick in the shade 'Velveteen'. This is actually my Mum's, but I noticed it was neglected by the hallway mirror for months, and she never wore it. So I'm babysitting her for now whilst I go through my bold lip phase. And she is a beauty! Slightly more of a berry red than 'Take The Stage', more of what you'd expect at this time of year, and still as universally flattering.

The formula of this one is more a velvet, satin finish - not completely matte but still dries down and won't slide around. I wore this one for drinks out with friends and think I touched up my lipstick once for the whole night, which is very impressive for me and says something about how well it lasts!

Last but definitely not least, is my other favourite nude lip combo. I think I exclusively wore these for the whole month of September, I'm that obsessed with this colour. First, NYX's Lip Liner in 'Natural' - a creamy, easy to use retractable liner that is great worn alone for a very matte look.

However, filling the whole lips in with this and topping it with the NYX Intense Butter Gloss in 'Peanut Brittle' is a match made in heaven. The colour is perfect for my skin tone, the double team of liner and gloss makes me look like I've had fillers, the intense pigment of both gives hours of wear (which is usually unheard of from a gloss). It's love, guys, it really is.
